Sentenced to Immediate Execution: "Lost At Sea" (Dark Supernatural Horror)
Game plan
In this spine-chilling installment of Doorway to Nightmare (Season 13, Episode 03), we leave the safety of the shore behind for a maritime nightmare!
What was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon of deep-sea fishing turns into a terrifying battle for survival. An unsuspecting tourist and an old, weathered sailor find themselves suddenly enveloped by a thick, unnatural fog that blinds their senses and stalls their boat. When the mist parts, they aren't alone. Towering over them is a massive, ancient pirate ship—frozen in time but filled with a bloodthirsty, undead crew. Dragged onto the decaying decks, the two modern mariners find themselves standing before a spectral captain, sentenced to immediate execution. Can they find a way off this floating tomb, or will they hang from the gallows of a ghost ship lost to time?

Speaker 1: Doorway to Nightmare is brought to you in part by Swanage Press. It lies in wait amidst your dreams, where nothing is ever how it seems. It is a portal to a terrifying world beyond the doorway. Nightmare. Come in. Welcome.
Speaker 1: I'm Artemis Black. Jacques Cousteau once said, the sea Once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
Speaker 2: So, Captain Jack, you must know a lot of stories.
Speaker 3: Aye, that I do, Mr. Wilson, that I do.
Speaker 2: Anything weird?
Speaker 3: Depends on what you mean by weird. The sea itself can be weird. Stay on her long enough, and you could become a weird story.
Speaker 1: Our mystery drama, Lost at Sea, was written especially for Doorways Nightmare by Winslow Swan and edited by Crimson McKenzie. Our cast includes Raven Adams, Dave Arkapoff, Nick Davis, and Crimson McKenzie. I'll return shortly with Act One. Meet Jerry Connors. Family man. Business man. Psychopathic killer. The Convincer by Winslow Swan. Now available on Amazon. Jerry Connors. He can convince you to do anything, even die. I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea in the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.
Speaker 1: So begins the poem Sea Fever by John Macefield, describing why the ocean holds such a tight grip on certain people.
Speaker 4: This is KB, Antonio Bay. It's just past the hour of eleven and the seas are cold. The weatherman says there might be a slight chance of rain tomorrow. But from where I'm sitting, I think the weatherman has been hitting the bottle. You know I'm teasing, Dan. I've got more music lined up, so keep me turned on. And I'll try to do the same for you.
Speaker 2: Man, she's got a sexy voice. Does she look as good as she sounds?
Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
Speaker 3: I would say better.
Speaker 2: Do you know her? I mean, personally?
Speaker 3: Of course I do. This is a small town, and Stevie Wayne has to go shopping and pay bills.
Speaker 2: Is she, you know, married?
Speaker 3: Her husband passed six years ago. She bought that lighthouse where the radio station is and got it up and running three years ago when she moved here. She's nice, sweet, raising her son who's now seven, and doesn't need some out-of-towner tourist messing up her life.
Speaker 5: Hey, easy, Mr.
Speaker 1: Stewart.
Speaker 2: I was just asking.
Speaker 3: That's Captain Jack Stewart to you, boy. Don't you forget it.
Speaker 2: Okay, okay. I'm sorry. I didn't know that you and her were.
Speaker 3: How would you like to swim back to your hotel?
Speaker 2: Now what did I say?
Speaker 3: Stevie Wayne is simply a good friend, that's all. Do I make myself clear, Mr.
Speaker 1: Wilson? Perfectly.
Speaker 2: Do you come out here at night often, Captain Jack?
Speaker 3: Most nights I do, but you're the first tourist I've brought out. Mostly people just want to relax in the sun away from the beaches.
Speaker 2: I've always liked the nighttime, especially on the water. You've been a sailor for a long time?
Speaker 3: Aye, 25 years in the Navy. After I retired, I bought this boat, and here I am.
Speaker 4: Ahoy, mateys. To my good friend Captain Jack on the seagrass and his passenger Tom Wilson. It's a beautiful night. The sea is calm, and I hope the fishing is good. This little gem goes out to you. And a warning. Be on the lookout for a fog bank heading your way from the west. This is Stevie Wayne on KAB Antonio Bay.
Speaker 2: I could fall in love with that voice.
Speaker 3: I don't see any fog bank.
Speaker 2: Hey, how far out are we?
Speaker 3: Oh, about a mile. See? Off the starboard bow, you can see Spivey Point, where the lighthouse is. And to the right, where the smaller lights are, that's your hotel. I lowered the anchor, so we ain't going anywhere.
Speaker 6: So, I suppose you know a lot of weird stories about the sea?
Speaker 3: She's definitely crazy. There's There's no fog bank out there. Oh, stories. Yeah, sure. Just last year, a fog bank rolled in along with a ship. A ghost ship. The crew came ashore and killed six people. Seems they were ancestors of the founding fathers of the town who stole the crew's gold.
Speaker 6: Because the town didn't want a leper colony only a mile away.
Speaker 2: Nice try. John Carpenter's The Fog, 1980.
Speaker 3: Sorry, I saw it on television the other night. But, you know, Carpenter based that on a real story. One that happened right here.
Speaker 2: Oh, please, do tell.
Speaker 3: The ship in the movie was called the Elizabeth Dane. And there really was a ship called that. Its captain was Uriah Blake. A black-hearted pirate who terrorized the whole coast. God help you if you were ever caught as a stowaway. Stevie, you must be looking at your radar wrong. There ain't no fog bank out.
Speaker 2: Hey, Captain Jack, look. Over there.
Speaker 3: There's a fog bank out there. This is screwy. My gauges must be all wrong.
Speaker 2: What does that mean?
Speaker 3: According to my readings, we got a wind blowing east... but the fog is moving west.
Speaker 2: You think we should head in?
Speaker 3: It's coming up pretty fast. No, we can just sit here till it passes.
Speaker 2: I can't see anything.
Speaker 3: Thick as pea soup out here. Can't hardly see the bow end of the boat.
Speaker 2: Hey, what's that? Is that a... No, it's a ship. A large wooden ship.
Speaker 3: I thought I must be seeing things. It's a clipper ship. Pulls up right alongside of us.
Speaker 5: Ahoy!
Speaker 3: Ahoy, anyone on deck!
Speaker 7: Ahoy!
Speaker 2: What was that sound?
Speaker 3: They wait anchor right beside us.
Speaker 2: Look, there's a ladder. Should we go and see what's up?
Speaker 3: You're supposed to ask permission to board another captain's boat.
Speaker 2: But what if someone is hurt? Maybe that's why they pulled up.
Speaker 3: Now how could they have seen us? The fog is too thick.
Speaker 5: I don't know.
Speaker 2: What do you think?
Speaker 3: Come on, let's find out what's going on.
Speaker 1: American author H. Jackson Brown Jr. once said, 20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bow lines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. We shall discover Act 2 shortly.
Speaker 7: The only witness to her murder cannot speak. Until now.
Speaker 5: Click.
Speaker 7: A Tale of Revenge by Winslow Swan. Now available on Amazon. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
Speaker 1: American writer and broadcaster Lowell Thomas once said, Separately, there was only wind, water, sail, and hull. But at my hand, the four had been given purpose and direction.
Speaker 2: It doesn't seem to be anybody on board.
Speaker 3: Ahoy! Anyone about?
Speaker 2: What do we do now?
Speaker 3: Come on, let's check below decks.
Speaker 2: This must be the galley.
Speaker 3: Yeah, but look. All the plates and cups are fused to the table.
Speaker 2: What is going on, Jack?
Speaker 3: That boat must be over 200 years old. But she looks like she's been turned over.
Speaker 1: In the water.
Speaker 2: Hey, what's that?
Speaker 3: Well, I'll be a Spanish doubloon.
Speaker 2: Is it worth anything?
Speaker 3: Are you kidding? That one coin will pay for your entire vacation. Stick it in your pocket.
Speaker 2: You think there might be more?
Speaker 3: I don't know. I think we ought to get back to the seagrass.
Speaker 8: Well, well, well. Two more stoways.
Speaker 3: Are you the captain?
Speaker 8: You're I a Blake, and yes.
Speaker 5: I be the captain of this ship that you have decided to invade.
Speaker 9: Come on, boys.
Speaker 8: Lend us a hand with these two beggars.
Speaker 2: What the hell is going on, Jack?
Speaker 3: It can't be. It just can't be.
Speaker 5: Seems we got three lucky stowaways to deal with tonight, boys. You got the first one tied up good and tight, Mr.
Speaker 1: Stewart.
Speaker 8: And the crew is ready.
Speaker 5: You picked the wrong ship to stow away on, you beggar.
Speaker 8: Time to get keel-hauled. Throw the beggar overboard!
Speaker 2: What are they doing?
Speaker 3: They tied the man up, threw him into the sea, and now they're dragging him along the keel. A barnacle-encrusted keel. It's like being dragged through an ocean of razor blades.
Speaker 1: Stop! Stop!
Speaker 9: Put him in!
Speaker 3: Put him.
Speaker 5: In!
Speaker 1: Ah!
Speaker 3: Ah!
Speaker 5: Ah! Guess I should have had him pulled up.
Speaker 8: Now then, what to do with the two of you?
Speaker 2: What's going to happen?
Speaker 9: I don't know.
Speaker 3: None of this should be happening.
Speaker 7: Hey, the chains.
Speaker 1: They disappeared.
Speaker 2: Disappeared? What is going on?
Speaker 3: Come on, come on. They're getting ready to leave. Get on deck and jump overboard.
Speaker 9: I'll be right behind you.
Speaker 2: Where's the sea grass?
Speaker 3: Damn, fog is still too thick. I can't see any... Wait, there she is. Quick, swim for it.
Speaker 1: Actor Morgan Freeman once said, If you live a life of make-believe, your life isn't worth anything until you do something that does challenge your reality. And to me, sailing the open ocean is a real challenge. Because it's life or death. I'll return shortly with our final act. It is in all of us. Waiting. Watching. Growing. Evil Within by Winslow Swan. Now available on Amazon.
Speaker 4: If you're liking these shows, check out our other episodes on our YouTube channel. There's also some previews of Swan's audiobooks on there as well. Come join us.
Speaker 1: Oh, captain, my captain, our fearful trip is done. The ship has weathered every wrack. The prize we sought is won. The port is near. The bells I hear. The people all exulting. while follow eyes with steady keel, the vessel grim and daring. But, oh, heart, heart, heart, oh, the bleeding drops of red, where on the deck my captain lies, fallen, cold, and dead.
Speaker 8: Oh, thank God we made it.
Speaker 3: Here, grab a blanket and get warm.
Speaker 2: Look, the ship is gone. And the fog.
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's moving out. Well, young fella, looks like you're going to have your very own weird story to tell.
Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess so. And hey, I got that gold coin, too. Now I can prove that I.
Speaker 3: What's the matter?
Speaker 2: Jack, the gold coin... It's gone.
Speaker 3: Gone? But I saw you put it in your pocket and zipper it up. Maybe it fell out of a hole in your pocket while you were swimming to the boat.
Speaker 2: There isn't any hole in my pocket.
Speaker 3: It's just gone.
Speaker 1: Mayday!
Speaker 3: Mayday! This is the seagrass. Come in, Coast Guard.
Speaker 2: Can't you raise anyone?
Speaker 3: Mayday!
Speaker 9: Mayday!
Speaker 8: Mayday! Mayday!
Speaker 3: This is the seagrass. Hello, Coast Guard.
Speaker 2: Jack, what is going on?
Speaker 3: Remember, I told you about the Elizabeth Dane.
Speaker 2: That ship from the movie? What about it?
Speaker 3: No, Tom. There really was an Elizabeth Dane. And its captain was a pirate, Uriah Blake.
Speaker 1: And we.
Speaker 3: We were just on board.
Speaker 2: But that can't be. Hey, where's the land?
Speaker 1: What?
Speaker 2: You said we were only a mile away. We could see the lighthouse and the hotel, so where are they now?
Speaker 3: Nothing but ocean in every direction.
Speaker 2: Could we have drifted out?
Speaker 3: No, the anchor is still down.
Speaker 4: This is Stevie Wayne on KAB, Antonio Bay. With a heavy heart, I dedicate this one to my good friend, Captain Jack and his passenger, Tom. Wherever they may be, I just heard from the Coast Guard that no signs of them or the boat, the Seagrass, have been spotted. They have been presumed lost at sea.
Speaker 1: No, we.
Speaker 2: We are here.
Speaker 3: Mayday, mayday, mayday, come in, anybody. Mayday, hello, Coast Guard.
Speaker 2: We are here. Do you hear me?
Speaker 4: We are here.
Speaker 5: We are here. We are here.
Speaker 1: A small fishing boat floating lazily on a calm sea with two frightened men on board now declared missing. I'll return with a final word.

Speaker 1: I leave you tonight with the words of Walt Whitman. My captain does not answer. His lips are pale and still. My father does not feel my arm. He has no pulse nor will. The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done. From fearful trip, the victor ship comes in with object one. Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells, but I with mournful tread walk the deck my captain lies, fallen, cold, and dead. Our cast included Raven Adams, Dave Arkapov, Crimson McKenzie, and Mick Davis. The story was edited by Crimson McKenzie and directed by Winslow Swann.
Speaker 1: And now, a preview of our next tale. So, where did you put the money?
Speaker 2: I told you, Morgan.
Speaker 5: There isn't any money. Of course there is. You killed the old man for it. Now where did you stash it?
Speaker 2: Please, Morgan.
Speaker 7: Let's get away from here.
Speaker 4: You don't know what could happen.
Speaker 2: It's just a field of nothing.
Speaker 3: Absolutely nothing.
Speaker 1: Except that. Well, and that huge oak tree.
Speaker 8: No, Morgan.
Speaker 4: They are here.
Speaker 7: And they want us to stay here.
Speaker 4: Forever.
