Speaker 1: Hi, this is Winslow.
Speaker 2: This is Crimson.
Speaker 1: And if you like what we're doing, hit that like button. And if you want to hear more, subscribe.
Speaker 3: With this key, you unlock the world to your dreams. What lies beyond could be the doorway to nightmare. Welcome. I'm your host through the doorway to nightmare. The word security may mean different things to different people. There is the security of a favorite toy for a child. There is the security of finding the one person to truly love. There is even the safety and security of That you may feel in your own home.
Speaker 1: And you are telling me that your security system is the best?
Speaker 2: Absolutely the best, sir. It has been proven 100% effective.
Speaker 1: I've had three systems installed so far, and burglars are still able to break in. I've lost almost $ 10, 000 in valuables. Trust me, Mr.
Speaker 4: Spivey.
Speaker 2: We have installed this same system in over 300 homes and businesses. It has never failed.
Speaker 3: Our mystery drama, Home Security, was adapted from the short story and written especially for Doorway to Nightmare by Winslow Swan and edited by Crimson McKenzie. Our cast includes Annie Mick, Raven Adams, Crimson McKenzie, and William Stafford. It is sponsored in part by Swanage Press. I'll be back shortly with Act One.
Speaker 2: Hi, it's Crimson. We hope you're enjoying these. Would you like to hear some more? Join us on our YouTube channel, Doorway to Nightmare, if you dare.
Speaker 3: When World War I ended, an increase in crime followed. As a result, Americans became sensitive to security needs and were eager to find ways to protect themselves and their property. The first home security system, a group of night watchmen who shook door handles to make sure that they were locked, was invented.
Speaker 1: And this, Clive, is a genuine Rembrandt.
Speaker 5: Most impressive, Richard. Did you have it authenticated?
Speaker 4: Naturally.
Speaker 1: The insurance company wouldn't have covered me otherwise.
Speaker 5: Well, you have a unique collection of antiquities.
Speaker 1: Thank you, Clive. But don't sell your own collection short.
Speaker 6: Now, I may have a few trinkets, but nothing compared to the museum-quality pieces that you have. I hope that you have all this insured and secured.
Speaker 1: The finest one I could find. You have no idea how expensive a home security system costs nowadays.
Speaker 5: You should do what I do. Get yourself a dog.
Speaker 4: Oh, sure.
Speaker 1: That way the thief could feed it as he is wiping you out.
Speaker 5: Nothing's happened yet. And I've had Bull for over three years now.
Speaker 1: And what happens if... bull attacks you.
Speaker 6: Now with me he's a sweetheart with someone else he's a killer.
Speaker 1: Thank you for the advice glyde but the last thing i need around here is another mouth to.
Speaker 7: Feed here's your drink darling.
Speaker 1: Oh thank you darling anything.
Speaker 7: Of interest in the newspaper tonight same old thing I don't know why you insist on upsetting your stomach over things that you have no control over.
Speaker 1: Another break-in.
Speaker 7: What?
Speaker 1: Oh, no, this item in the paper. They had another home broken into last night.
Speaker 7: How dreadful.
Speaker 1: And a bit frightening.
Speaker 7: How so?
Speaker 1: It was only a few blocks from here. According to the paper, the owners were away when the crime happened.
Speaker 7: Good thing we have our alarms in place.
Speaker 1: It didn't deter these burglars. And they were able to get past the system, cleaned out the house of almost everything.
Speaker 7: Richard, please don't tell me anymore.
Speaker 1: Oh, Elaine, don't worry, my dear. We have the most sophisticated security system ever invented.
Speaker 7: Wasn't it a magnificent play?
Speaker 1: I must admit, they put on quite a performance.
Speaker 7: Thank you for taking me, dear.
Speaker 1: I must take you to the theater more often.
Speaker 7: You never know what may happen afterwards. Richard!
Speaker 2: The house!
Speaker 4: I don't believe it!
Speaker 7: Oh, Richard!
Speaker 1: Now don't panic. Call the police while I make a list of what those thieves took.
Speaker 5: How much did they get?
Speaker 3: All the silver.
Speaker 1: The electronics and any jewelry they could find.
Speaker 5: Well, lucky there weren't art connoisseurs.
Speaker 1: Still, as I added up, I've lost almost $ 7, 000.
Speaker 5: And what do the insurance companies say?
Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sure that they will try to find a way not to pay on the policy.
Speaker 5: And you did contact the police?
Speaker 1: Of course I did. I'm not completely stupid. Well, naturally, they said that they would investigate, but even I know what that means.
Speaker 7: Right.
Speaker 5: Don't call us, we'll call you.
Speaker 1: Exactly.
Speaker 5: What about the security company?
Speaker 1: They said that there was nothing wrong with their system. I then asked how anyone was able to break in at all.
Speaker 5: And their answer?
Speaker 1: Oh, they talked about a possible glitch in their system or some such nonsense.
Speaker 6: So, are they willing to compensate on a system that you paid for from them?
Speaker 1: Well, I'm not sure at the moment. I am sure that I will be shopping around for better security.
Speaker 3: Being secure in your own home can be quite tranquil, but to discover that someone else has been able to break in creates a feeling of dread and insecurity. Don't be too insecure, as I'll be back with Act 2.
Speaker 2: Have you heard any good books lately? You can find Winslow Swan's audiobooks at www.winslowswan.com today. Also on Amazon.
Speaker 3: The first video security system was, believe it or not, invented in the 1940s. In his book, 1984, George Orwell told of a frightening security system that monitored everyone.
Speaker 1: Hello, yes, I saw your advertisement and I would like to receive an estimate. Yes, I should be home at that time. The associate's name is Clara Selby? Well, I shall expect her then.
Speaker 2: Mr. Spivey? Richard Spivey?
Speaker 1: You must be Clara Selby from the security company.
Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Here are my credentials.
Speaker 3: Yes, they look in order.
Speaker 2: You should always make sure with whom you're speaking with, especially a stranger at your door.
Speaker 3: Oh, I always am.
Speaker 1: Won't you come in?
Speaker 2: Very impressive, Mr.
Speaker 7: Spivey.
Speaker 2: Tell me, what prompted you to call our company?
Speaker 1: We had a break-in the other night.
Speaker 2: How dreadful!
Speaker 1: Luckily, most of the antiques were left alone.
Speaker 2: The uneducated burglar is the best kind.
Speaker 1: Yes, thankfully. I have almost $ 100, 000 tied up in paintings and sculptures. My wife, Elaine, is the real expert.
Speaker 2: I'm sure she is a lovely woman.
Speaker 1: Oh, she is a professor of art at the university, so she is, well, much more educated than I.
Speaker 3: Wow.
Speaker 2: And I am sure that you would like to protect not only your home, but her as well.
Speaker 3: Well, of course.
Speaker 2: Which is why I've been instructed to offer you our most deluxe of packages.
Speaker 1: Hmm, I can almost see the dollar signs in your eyes.
Speaker 2: It isn't expensive as you might think. But then again, can we really put a price on security? Hmm. Okay, imagine if you and your lovely wife had been home when the burglars broke in.
Speaker 3: I'm trying not to.
Speaker 2: It might have been a lot worse than just the taking of a few trinkets.
Speaker 1: Why don't we just discuss this, um, deluxe system of yours?
Speaker 2: Oh, the deluxe. It's unlike anything you've ever seen. Completely automatic and only takes a few hours to install.
Speaker 1: Oh, wonderful. More holes in the walls.
Speaker 2: On the contrary, Mr. Spivey. Our system requires no additional wiring or mounting of any equipment.
Speaker 1: No holes? How is that possible?
Speaker 2: Well, we do have a few trade secrets that I'm not allowed to indulge.
Speaker 1: We'll never mind all that. How effective is this system?
Speaker 2: 100%.
Speaker 1: Now, wait a minute. Even I know that there has not been a system invented that is 100% foolproof.
Speaker 2: Believe me, Mr. Spivey, we have yet to have one, one of our many, many clients disturbed in any way.
Speaker 1: And how many clients have you so far?
Speaker 2: Without giving away specific numbers, I can assure you that we hold the security of more than 300 homes and many other businesses in this city alone.
Speaker 1: Quite impressive. And not one of them have been broken into?
Speaker 2: Not one.
Speaker 4: Well, that's fine.
Speaker 1: All right, down to business. How much is this service going to cost me?
Speaker 2: Amir, half of your material assets.
Speaker 1: I beg your pardon? Did you say half?
Speaker 2: That will give you a lifetime of protection, no matter where you are. Suppose you sell this house and move to another. Our system will follow you without reinstallation or renewal of contract.
Speaker 4: But half of... Of everything?
Speaker 2: As I said before, can you put a price on security?
Speaker 5: Did I hear you correctly, Richard?
Speaker 1: Yes, Clive. Half of everything.
Speaker 5: Surely you didn't pay it. Richard, are you insane?
Speaker 1: Well, after the second break-in.
Speaker 5: You mean you had another break-in?
Speaker 1: Yes, and what's worse is that Elaine was home when it happened.
Speaker 5: And is she all right?
Speaker 1: Oh, yes, perfectly all right. She heard the break-in and hid in the closet. Of course, they got away before the police could actually get there. Elaine was scared, but she is okay. She went to visit her sister while I signed the paperwork and they installed the new system.
Speaker 2: So....
Speaker 5: You did pay.
Speaker 1: Like the sales rep said, you can't put a price on security.
Speaker 3: The feeling of being secure can be most gratifying. But what price would you pay for complete security? Think about it before I return with Act 3. Mystery.
Speaker 2: Horror. Thriller.
Speaker 3: Suspense.
Speaker 2: Novels and short story collections from Winslow Swan, now available from Amazon.com.
Speaker 3: Franklin Roosevelt once said that if you want real security... Go to prison. They will feed you, clothe you, give you a place to sleep. You will have everything. Except freedom.
Speaker 7: So is everything okay?
Speaker 1: Oh, I couldn't be happier, Elaine. I was told that the system had been successfully put in place and that we are now completely secured.
Speaker 7: That is great news. Now, they didn't put any more holes in the wall, did they?
Speaker 1: Well, if they did, I can't tell.
Speaker 7: What about the control panel by the door?
Speaker 1: There isn't one.
Speaker 7: Then how do they know it's us when we come through the door? It is an alarm.
Speaker 1: Well, according to Clara, the entire system is automatic. It only recognizes our own biometric system and will act accordingly.
Speaker 7: That must be one sophisticated system.
Speaker 1: Yes, I talked with one of their other customers and they Only that it was the best thing that they ever did.
Speaker 7: I certainly hope so.
Speaker 4: When are you coming home?
Speaker 7: Not until Friday, if you can stand to be away from me.
Speaker 1: I shall be counting the minutes until you return, my beautiful lady.
Speaker 7: Oh, how you talk, kind sir.
Speaker 4: Hang on, Elaine.
Speaker 7: Everything okay?
Speaker 3: Well, I'm not sure.
Speaker 1: I hear something very strange.
Speaker 7: You don't think someone is trying to break in, do you?
Speaker 3: Oh, no, it's not that.
Speaker 7: Oh, Richard, be careful.
Speaker 4: What on earth?
Speaker 7: What is it?
Speaker 1: It's a mouse.
Speaker 7: A mouse?
Speaker 1: Yes, a small white one.
Speaker 7: Call the exterminator first thing in the morning.
Speaker 1: No, Elaine, you don't understand. The mouse is in a cage.
Speaker 7: What?
Speaker 1: Let me call you back. I'm taking care of this right now.
Speaker 7: Richard?
Speaker 1: What is this thing doing here? You won't be here for very long.
Speaker 4: There you go.
Speaker 1: Scamper away and stay out of this house.
Speaker 2: Clara Selby, how may I help you?
Speaker 1: Ah, Miss Selby, just the person I was hoping to hear.
Speaker 4: This is Richard.
Speaker 1: Richard Spivey?
Speaker 2: Why, yes, Mr. Spivey. What can I do for you?
Speaker 1: You can begin by telling me what kind of a security company that you represent.
Speaker 2: I beg your pardon?
Speaker 1: I don't know what kind of games you are playing with me, but I just found your cage in my living room.
Speaker 7: Well.
Speaker 2: Yes, sir. It is part of the deluxe package. You are now fully protected.
Speaker 1: Oh, so the mouse was supposed to fend off the burglars.
Speaker 3: Oh, no.
Speaker 2: You don't understand. The mouse is simply an offering that we provide.
Speaker 3: An offering? To what?
Speaker 2: It is all explained in the papers that you signed. You did read our contract, didn't you? Oh, yes.
Speaker 4: I read it.
Speaker 1: I couldn't understand most of it. The Old English was extremely confusing, and what was with all of the Latin?
Speaker 2: Oh, well, it is just legal jargon that only attorneys can decipher. Wait, what did you do with the mouse?
Speaker 1: I let it go, naturally.
Speaker 2: You let it go? Right out the door.
Speaker 4: And one more thing.
Speaker 1: Who gave you permission to carve up my oak bedroom door?
Speaker 2: Again, Mr. Spivey, if you had read the contract.
Speaker 1: That door was imported from Spain. Do you have any idea the cost.
Speaker 2: The cost of complete security can be very high, Mr. Spivey.
Speaker 1: Hang on, Miss Selby. I hear something.
Speaker 2: Wait, wait. Mr. Spivey, are you in the living room?
Speaker 1: Just hang on.
Speaker 3: Hold it right there, buddy. Who are you?
Speaker 4: What are you doing in my house?
Speaker 8: Well, let me see. I've got this gun. It's pointing at you, and I understand that you have a nice, big, cozy safe somewhere.
Speaker 7: Mr.
Speaker 2: Spivey! Mr. Spivey! Is there anything wrong? Mr.
Speaker 7: Spivey!
Speaker 1: Cheap, common crook. I should have known.
Speaker 8: Now look, unless you want a bullet in the gut, I suggest you proceed to the safe.
Speaker 4: I will do no such... Oh, I think that you will. Hey, what are you looking at?
Speaker 2: Mr. Spivey, Mr. Spivey, you must get to the bedroom. Now, Mr. Spivey, now!
Speaker 4: It's... Whatever it is, it is behind you.
Speaker 8: You think I'm going to fall for that old gag?
Speaker 4: No, no, no, I swear. It's right behind you.
Speaker 1: A dark substance forming out of thin.
Speaker 4: Air what are you talking.
Speaker 8: Hey what the hell are you.
Speaker 4: Oh dear god it's ripping out his heart i think i'm going to be sick!
Speaker 1: It's eating, gnawing the flesh off of his face!
Speaker 3: It's eating his head!
Speaker 1: It's eating!
Speaker 4: Oh, I must have fainted. Maybe I dreamed the whole.
Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no.
Speaker 4: The body, it's been ripped to shreds. Good Lord, blood is everywhere.
Speaker 3: Mr.
Speaker 2: Spivey, please, please answer me. Mr. Spivey, Mr.
Speaker 4: Spivey, please answer me.
Speaker 3: Yes, the phone. Miss Elby?
Speaker 2: Oh, thank the gods. Are you all right?
Speaker 4: I am, but the man who broke in isn't. I need to call the police.
Speaker 2: Mr. Spivey, are you still in the living room?
Speaker 4: Look, what has that got to do with.
Speaker 2: It matters, Mr.
Speaker 7: Spivey.
Speaker 2: Richard, you must listen to me. You let the sacrifice go. You must get to your bedroom now. The symbols on the door should protect you from the demon.
Speaker 4: What are you talking about? A man has just been killed by. I don't know how to describe it.
Speaker 2: Now, get to the bedroom. Even though the demon is fed, it might not be done.
Speaker 4: Wait.
Speaker 1: There is something over in the corner.
Speaker 4: Red fiery eyes. It looks like... Run!
Speaker 2: Please get to the bedroom now, now, before.
Speaker 7: It's too late.
Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
Speaker 1: God.
Speaker 4: It's... It's... No!
Speaker 2: Yes, this is Agent 492013. Clara Selby. I have a cleanup. Two victims in all. However, one of them was the contract holder. Oh no, sir. He paid for the Lifetime Deluxe package. In full. So my commission is still intact?
Speaker 2: So what about the contract? Null and void now. That's all I wanted to know. I'll be back in the office tomorrow.
Speaker 8: Good night.
Speaker 3: To have complete security, you must be willing to give up a lot. Richard Spivey gave up much more. I'll return shortly.
Speaker 1: If you're enjoying these stories, come over to our YouTube channel. Doorway to Nightmare.
Speaker 2: Where we add a few pics to color your imagination. See the faces behind the voices too. Come on. You know you wanna.
Speaker 3: We worry about our security every day. The reality is that we will probably never be 100% secure. No matter what we do. Our cast included Raven Adams, Annie Nick, Winslow Swan, Crimson McKenzie, and William Stafford. The story was edited by Crimson McKenzie, and the entire production was under the direction of Winslow Swan. And now, a preview of our next tale.
Speaker 1: Do you realize the cost of the special effects alone?
Speaker 2: I don't care what the cost is. I want it.
Speaker 1: Emma, the studio can't afford to.
Speaker 2: Look, Leonard, how much are we really talking to produce my movie?
Speaker 1: Nobody has that kind of money. Now, why can't you just put another sequel out and.
Speaker 2: How much?
Speaker 1: All right, with all of the effects, not to mention the actors that you want, we're talking at least seven million dollars.
Speaker 2: Who do I make the check out to?
Speaker 3: Doorway to Nightmare is brought to you in part by Swanage Press. This is your host, inviting you to return with us through the doorway to nightmare for another adventure into the world of your terrifying imagination. Until next time, slumber peacefully. Epilogue The butler did it.
