Speaker 1: Doorway to Nightmare is brought to you in part by Swanage Press. It lies in wait amidst your dreams, where nothing is ever how it seems. It is a portal to a terrifying world beyond the doorway. Nightmare. Come in. Welcome. I'm Artemis Black. The actor and comedian Pauly Shore once said, small towns seem to appreciate things a little bit more. They're less jaded, and they're more kind of authentic. And more themselves.
Speaker 2: It is quite a peaceful town. I don't think I saw anyone on the streets tonight.
Speaker 3: Most everyone goes to bed early.
Speaker 2: Yes, I could see myself living here. Relaxing, not bothered by any problems.
Speaker 4: Could you, Jake?
Speaker 3: Jake? Would you want to live here? With me?
Speaker 2: Sure, but since all of this is only a dream.
Speaker 3: Feel my hands. Touch them. Does this feel like a dream to you?
Speaker 1: Our mystery drama, Frozen in Time, was written especially for Doorway to Nightmare by Winslow Swan and edited by Crimson McKenzie. Our cast includes Robert Jackson, Patience Adams, Mick Davis, and William Stafford. I'll return shortly with Act One. This is Winslow Swan, inviting you inside the world of my imagination, a world of mystery, madness, and murder. Ten Tales from the Maelstrom.
Speaker 5: Now available at Amazon.com.
Speaker 1: Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, For any American who had the great and priceless privilege of being raised in a small town... There always remains with him nostalgic memories, and the older he grows, the more he senses what he owed to the simple honesty and neighborliness, the integrity that he saw all around him in those days.
Speaker 6: Yes, I'm trying to get home! I'm driving as fast as I can! Look, I've been on the road since this morning, almost 12 hours straight!
Speaker 5: Hey, you were.
Speaker 2: The one who said I should take the promotion and... And of course you hang up on me. Why the heck did we even get married?
Speaker 1: Oh, man.
Speaker 5: I've got to wake up.
Speaker 7: Hey, I mean, look. There's a diner up ahead. And where there is a diner... There is definitely coffee.
Speaker 8: Good evening, mister. Just send any where you like. As long as it's at the counter.
Speaker 4: Sure thing.
Speaker 2: And you must be Buddy.
Speaker 8: That's what everybody calls me anyway. Actually, it's Bernard, but I kind of like Buddy.
Speaker 5: So it sticks.
Speaker 1: Now, what can I get you?
Speaker 2: Just some hot black coffee.
Speaker 8: Well, I just made a pot, so you're in luck.
Speaker 1: How much?
Speaker 8: That'll be 35 cents.
Speaker 1: How?
Speaker 2: How much?
Speaker 8: Now, if you can find it cheaper anywhere else, I'll match that price. But for now, it's 35 cents.
Speaker 5: Oh, no, no.
Speaker 2: That's fine.
Speaker 4: Here you go.
Speaker 8: Would you like a little apple pie to go with your coffee?
Speaker 2: No, this should do the trick. I see you still use an old cash register.
Speaker 1: What else would I use?
Speaker 8: I mean, I suppose I could do it on my fingers and toes.
Speaker 2: No, I just meant that you don't have a computer.
Speaker 8: Uh, mister, I, uh, well, I don't mean to pry, but when was the last time you had any sleep?
Speaker 6: Honestly, I can remember. I've been driving for the past 12 hours to get back home and still have at least 20 hours to go.
Speaker 5: Oh, well, then that explains it.
Speaker 1: Computer.
Speaker 4: Well, you're just tired, that's all.
Speaker 8: Look, drive up the street about five blocks. On the right side, you're going to see a large mansion. Now, the lady that owns it is Victoria Summers. She rents out rooms and I'll serve some pretty good food and at a reasonable price. Now, you just tell her Buddy sent you.
Speaker 9: BELL RINGS BELL.
Speaker 4: RINGS yes are you.
Speaker 2: Are you miss victoria summers.
Speaker 3: Yes i am now what can i do for such a fine gentleman as yourself.
Speaker 2: Forgive me for staring but i wasn't expecting such an attractive young.
Speaker 3: Lady my such a compliment thank you sir Oh, do forgive me.
Speaker 2: I'm Jake Everett. I was told by Buddy at the diner that you might have a room to rent.
Speaker 3: Please, come in.
Speaker 1: Wow.
Speaker 2: Such a beautiful place you have here.
Speaker 3: It was left to me by my mother after she passed away. I converted some of the rooms into bedrooms, and now I rent them out when I can.
Speaker 2: So, you do have a room available?
Speaker 3: Well, yes, there are two couples on the second floor, but I think you will find the bedroom down this hallway to your liking.
Speaker 2: I can't tell you how grateful I am. Um, oh, uh, how much?
Speaker 3: Would you like some tea, Mr.
Speaker 9: Everett?
Speaker 3: I just made it, and it might help you relax. It looks like you could use some.
Speaker 1: Thank you.
Speaker 2: Yes, I think that would be nice. And please call me Jake.
Speaker 3: Lemon sugar milk, Jake?
Speaker 5: Oh, oh no, thank you.
Speaker 2: Mmm, this is good. Chamomile?
Speaker 3: Yes, it is supposed to have a calming effect.
Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Miss Summers, or is it Mrs.
Speaker 3: I do not have a husband as of yet. I took care of my mother after I graduated from nursing school. When she passed, I simply stayed on here, taking in boarders when I could.
Speaker 2: And two couples staying on the second floor?
Speaker 4: Yes.
Speaker 3: It seems they came up for fishing and simply decided to stay.
Speaker 6: I'm sorry, Miss Summers, but do you have some sort of alarm going off somewhere?
Speaker 3: Please, call me Vicky. And no, no alarm of any kind.
Speaker 2: I swear, I hear a ringing. It's getting louder.
Speaker 4: What the?
Speaker 2: Oh, I must have fallen asleep.
Speaker 6: Hey, my buddy's diner up ahead.
Speaker 2: Thank God.
Speaker 1: Evening, mister.
Speaker 10: What can I get for you?
Speaker 2: Um, I'm sorry. I must be in the wrong place.
Speaker 10: Well, what were you looking for?
Speaker 2: Buddy's Diner.
Speaker 10: Congratulations. You found us. Now what'll it be?
Speaker 2: Where's Buddy?
Speaker 1: Who?
Speaker 10: Look, I'm the only one working here. Matter of fact, I own the place. I just kept the name Buddy because, well, it kind of fit the place, you know.
Speaker 2: These pictures on the wall. What town is that?
Speaker 3: Old.
Speaker 1: That's Lakeland.
Speaker 10: Aptly named, too.
Speaker 2: Where is it?
Speaker 1: Are you kidding?
Speaker 2: Look, I was just there. This picture. The one of the large house. with the girl standing on the front porch. That is Victoria Summers.
Speaker 10: And you say you were in that town tonight?
Speaker 2: Why is that so hard for you to understand?
Speaker 10: Because that town, Lakeland, is under 70 feet of water.
Speaker 1: Mark Twain once said, In the small town of Hannibal, Missouri, when I was a boy, everybody was poor, but didn't know it. And everybody was comfortable, and did know it. I know that I will return shortly with Act 2.
Speaker 11: The only witness to her murder cannot speak. Until now. Click. A Tale of Revenge by Winslow Swan. Now available on Amazon. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
Speaker 1: American author Laura E. Richards once said, We know our neighbors so far as we have the right to know them. We hear of their joys and their sorrows and hasten to make them ours so far as we may. Life in a small town is like a layer cake. One gets the whole of it. Frosted top, lemon filling, and all.
Speaker 2: What do you mean it's underwater?! I was just there!
Speaker 10: Look, pal, it seems to me that you dozed off while driving. You only dreamed this place, and that photo simply reminded you of your dream.
Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Perhaps I did fall asleep at the wheel. What can you tell me about this Lakeland?
Speaker 10: Not a lot to tell. Around 1950, the Army Corps of Engineers built a dam Government bought up all the land and then flooded the whole thing. Over 50,000 acres of farmland, gone. Over 200 families, gone.
Speaker 2: That's almost insane.
Speaker 10: Not to mention the 20 graveyards that had to be moved, including the corpses.
Speaker 2: You're trying to say the lake is.
Speaker 2: Haunted?
Speaker 10: I'm not saying anything. Just what I've heard. People come up here to go swimming, fishing, boating, or stay in one of the cabins, and they simply disappear.
Speaker 2: Drowned?
Speaker 10: Probably. But their bodies are never found. They don't even wash up on shore, like what happened last year.
Speaker 1: What do you mean?
Speaker 10: There was a boat floating out near where the town is. Fishing gear all decked out, plenty of food and drink, but nobody on board. Folks said that two couples went out, but never came back. The boat was completely empty.
Speaker 2: Maybe they all went swimming and, you know, drowned.
Speaker 4: Maybe.
Speaker 10: Or maybe the town claimed four more people. It's weird down there. Like a town frozen in time.
Speaker 5: Nope.
Speaker 10: Won't catch me going out there for any reason.
Speaker 2: But I was there! I know I was!
Speaker 4: Yes! And Vicky!
Speaker 2: She was real, wasn't she? Maybe I am just tired.
Speaker 4: So tired.
Speaker 11: Jake?
Speaker 4: Jake?
Speaker 3: You haven't heard a word, have you?
Speaker 2: I guess I must have dozed off.
Speaker 3: It's my fault for keeping you awake. You should get some rest.
Speaker 2: Could I ask you a question, Vicky?
Speaker 3: You may ask me anything.
Speaker 1: Are you.
Speaker 2: am I.
Speaker 5: really here?
Speaker 3: Well, I would hope so. After all, you did call me beautiful earlier.
Speaker 4: And you are.
Speaker 2: I wish we had met three years ago before I married that... that.
Speaker 1: Oh, never mind.
Speaker 3: No, please.
Speaker 5: Go on. Darn.
Speaker 2: That ringing again.
Speaker 3: Jake, please. What were you about to say?
Speaker 2: I was going to say I was.
Speaker 1: Ow!
Speaker 2: That ringing is getting worse.
Speaker 1: It's getting.
Speaker 5: No, no!
Speaker 4: No, no, no, no!
Speaker 2: It can't just be a dream!
Speaker 1: He wanders, like a day-appearing dream, through the dim wildernesses of the mind, through desert woods and cracks, which seem like ocean, homeless, boundless, unconfined. From Percy Shelley, and perhaps quite apt for Jake, is it all just a dream or a waking nightmare? Return with us, won't you, for Act 3. Meet Jerry Connors. Family man. Business man. Psychopathic Killer. The Convincer by Winslow Swan. Now available on Amazon. Jerry Connors. He can convince you to do anything. Even die. Walt Disney once said, laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever.
Speaker 2: A town under 70 feet of water?
Speaker 5: Yeah, sure.
Speaker 4: There has to be a town near here.
Speaker 1: Somewhere.
Speaker 2: I've been to it. I know that Vicky is.
Speaker 3: She's... She's... Jake? Did you fall asleep again?
Speaker 1: No, Vicky. I didn't.
Speaker 2: I'm simply.
Speaker 6: I'm simply sleeping now. You, dear Victoria Summers, are in my dream.
Speaker 4: No, Jake, no.
Speaker 3: Here, take my hands in yours. Does this feel like a dream? And here, touch my face. Does that feel like a dream? Jake, kiss me. Did that feel like a dream?
Speaker 6: No.
Speaker 2: No, Victoria, it most definitely did not.
Speaker 6: God, I'm so confused.
Speaker 3: You don't need to be, my love. Just tell me, what do you want?
Speaker 2: What does anyone want?
Speaker 4: Ow!
Speaker 1: Ow!
Speaker 2: Jeez, that ringing won't quit!
Speaker 3: Please, Jake, tell me, what do you want most?
Speaker 1: Darn.
Speaker 2: Dang it, that ringing... fell in my.
Speaker 3: Ears please jake tell me what you want i.
Speaker 6: Only want to stay here stay here.
Speaker 3: With you for all of eternity.
Speaker 7: Yes for all eternity.
Speaker 3: Then find a way jake find a way to be with me.
Speaker 4: What no no no i was with her.
Speaker 2: I will be with her! Don't worry, my love.
Speaker 5: I'm coming to you, Vicky.
Speaker 2: I'll be with you forever!
Speaker 9: Evening, Sheriff.
Speaker 10: Or should I say morning?
Speaker 5: It's four in the morning, and I'm questioning why I even ran for sheriff. Nice, quiet little town, they said. Nothing ever happens here. Yeah, right.
Speaker 10: So what happened tonight?
Speaker 5: I've got five witnesses that tell me some nut drove off Lakeland Bridge.
Speaker 10: Drunk driver?
Speaker 5: Don't think so. But I'm sure that is what we will put it down as. No skid marks. Only my witness saying how this maniac started to cross the bridge, sped up, rammed the guardrail, and plunged into the lake.
Speaker 10: So why are you here?
Speaker 5: Anybody come in here tonight acting, you know, funny?
Speaker 10: Only one guy, but he was extremely tired. Couldn't stop looking at the pictures of that town at the bottom of the lake.
Speaker 5: Did he say anything?
Speaker 1: Sure.
Speaker 10: That he had been there.
Speaker 1: Tonight. Heh.
Speaker 10: Told him he must have been dreaming.
Speaker 5: Any idea who he was or where he was heading?
Speaker 2: None.
Speaker 1: Why do you ask?
Speaker 5: We pulled the car out of the lake. Found his wallet and his driver's license and a few pictures. Here, take a look at this one. Is this the guy?
Speaker 10: Kinda looks like the guy from last night. Didn't you find him?
Speaker 1: Nope.
Speaker 5: Nobody at all.
Speaker 10: Guess the lake claimed another one.
Speaker 5: Look at this picture on the wall.
Speaker 10: What about it?
Speaker 5: That's the old mansion, right? With the girl standing on the porch?
Speaker 10: Yeah, so what if... Hey, what's going on?
Speaker 5: You see it too?
Speaker 1: She's not alone.
Speaker 10: There's a guy standing with her. Holding her close and smiling.
Speaker 5: Here's the photo I took from the driver's wallet. Compare the two. The man who just drove his car off Lakeland Bridge... is the same man in the photo from 1950.
Speaker 10: But how is that possible?
Speaker 1: How is it possible? How could you explain it? How would you explain it? And who would believe it? I'll return shortly With a final word.
