Speaker 1: When you sleep, you enter into another world. Beyond that world lies the doorway to nightmare. Come in. Welcome. I'm your host through the doorway to nightmare. I have often been asked where I like to go for a vacation. I'm never sure what to tell people since I simply go wherever the mood strikes me. I do know where not to go.
Speaker 2: What are we going to do, Brad?
Speaker 1: I don't know.
Speaker 3: We just have to keep our voices as low as possible.
Speaker 2: I just want to go home.
Speaker 4: I want to go home as well. But no matter how much I row, we aren't going anywhere.
Speaker 1: Our mystery drama, Don't Go to Echo Lake, was written especially for Doorway to Nightmare by Winslow Swan and stars... It is sponsored in part by Swanage Press. I'll be back shortly with Act One. Brad and Margaret Harris have been married for a little over a year. Both are hardworking and have plans to start a family. The one thing that they have not had is a proper honeymoon.
Speaker 5: If you remember correctly, you promised to take me somewhere that was romantic and beautiful. Well, I think that I found us the perfect spot.
Speaker 1: Okay, love. You're right. I did promise.
Speaker 3: Where on this wonderful planet would you like to go?
Speaker 5: Right there.
Speaker 1: What?
Speaker 3: Did you throw a dart at a map?
Speaker 6: No, silly.
Speaker 5: I came across an article about it last week and did a little research.
Speaker 3: Echo Lake. I've never heard of it.
Speaker 2: Neither had I.
Speaker 5: But at least it isn't too far away and our budget can afford it.
Speaker 3: We're lucky our budget can afford the lights and the rent.
Speaker 2: Oh, honey. It's going to get better.
Speaker 5: You're up for that promotion and I'm starting to get some more orders in.
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. What will happen to that promotion if I suddenly go away on a vacation?
Speaker 5: When was the last time that you even had a vacation?
Speaker 1: Oh, you're right.
Speaker 3: It has been a while. I should have enough time built up to take at least a weekend.
Speaker 2: A weekend?
Speaker 5: I was thinking about two weeks.
Speaker 3: Let me see what I can do.
Speaker 5: Have I told you lately how much I love you? Every day.
Speaker 1: I have no idea where we're at.
Speaker 5: The map says we should be coming up on Whispering Pines in about a mile.
Speaker 3: It's not a sign to be seen in the last ten miles.
Speaker 2: Think of it this way.
Speaker 5: The isolation may do both of us some good.
Speaker 3: Ah, there it is. Whispering Pines, population 73. I at least hope they have a gas station or we are going to be walking. Hello? There doesn't seem to be anyone here.
Speaker 5: Oh, there must be.
Speaker 1: Hello?
Speaker 3: Why did I let you talk me into this?
Speaker 2: Now quit complaining.
Speaker 6: Hello?
Speaker 3: Sorry, folks.
Speaker 1: I was in the back.
Speaker 6: Didn't hear you drive up. My name's Clemens, and you won't find a better stock store within 100 miles.
Speaker 3: I'm Brad Harris, and this is my wife Maggie.
Speaker 6: Very pleased to meet you. Now, what can I get you for?
Speaker 3: Gas, if you have any.
Speaker 6: Oh, plenty of gas.
Speaker 1: Fine.
Speaker 6: Would you like me to fill her up?
Speaker 3: Oh, I think I can manage. Honey, you want to get us a few supplies?
Speaker 2: Sure.
Speaker 6: You folks on vacation?
Speaker 2: Yes, we are.
Speaker 5: Our first one since getting married.
Speaker 6: Well then, congratulations. I take it this is your honeymoon?
Speaker 5: Yes, but only a year late.
Speaker 6: Where might you be going up in this neck of the country at?
Speaker 5: A place called Echo Lake.
Speaker 2: Do you know it?
Speaker 6: Did you say Echo Lake?
Speaker 5: Yes. It's supposed to be near here according to the map.
Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am, it is. If you don't mind me making a suggestion, we got a real nice motel in town run by a friend of mine. She can give you a good rate and the honeymoon is sweet. Why don't I give her a call?
Speaker 5: We have our camping equipment and a canoe. I just want to get away from everyone.
Speaker 3: Well, $ 20 did it. Here you go.
Speaker 6: Thank you, sir.
Speaker 3: Uh, honey, did you get everything?
Speaker 5: I think so.
Speaker 2: You ready?
Speaker 6: Your wife tells me that you two are going camping up on Echo Lake.
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, that's right. And we had better get going or we won't have any daylight to set up camp.
Speaker 6: Sir, I don't mean to speak out of turn. Take my advice. Don't go to Echo Lake.
Speaker 1: Well, now, what had started out as a honeymoon has suddenly become ominous. Our couple look at the old man questioningly. He looks at them, wondering if it will be the last time. We shall be looking into Act Two shortly. Act Two Brad and Margaret Harris are taking their honeymoon after being married a little over a year. They're heading to a quiet and peaceful weekend of camping near Echo Lake, even though they have been warned not to go.
Speaker 2: Honey, I wonder what he meant.
Speaker 1: Who?
Speaker 2: That man, Clemens.
Speaker 1: Oh, that.
Speaker 3: Probably some local legend that he didn't want to get into.
Speaker 2: You never mentioned a legend, Brad. Just told us that we shouldn't go there.
Speaker 3: Well, we can always change our plans.
Speaker 2: No. This is my honeymoon, and this is what I want to do.
Speaker 1: There we go.
Speaker 3: Your mansion awaits you, my lady.
Speaker 5: Didn't take as long as you thought it would.
Speaker 1: And it's a good thing, too. The sun is almost gone.
Speaker 3: You need some help with the campfire?
Speaker 5: Oh, I think that I got it.
Speaker 2: Want something to eat?
Speaker 1: Oh, you read my mind.
Speaker 2: There you are.
Speaker 5: Maggie's famous campfire stew.
Speaker 3: Straight out of a can.
Speaker 5: Hey, I slid over that meal all day.
Speaker 3: Well, it's delicious.
Speaker 2: It really is pretty here.
Speaker 1: Yes, it is. In the morning, we can put the canoe in.
Speaker 2: What was that?
Speaker 4: It was just an owl.
Speaker 1: Remember, you're in the woods now.
Speaker 3: No sirens or alarms going off.
Speaker 2: No cars, no traffic, no noise. I wonder why they call it Echo Lake.
Speaker 1: There's only one way to find out. Hello!
Speaker 3: Well, I guess you have your answer.
Speaker 5: Now that was weird.
Speaker 1: Must have. bounced back off the mountain.
Speaker 2: Creepy. It didn't even sound like you.
Speaker 1: Do you want to go all the way to the middle?
Speaker 4: Sure.
Speaker 5: It is such a lovely day.
Speaker 2: Peaceful.
Speaker 5: Not hot.
Speaker 3: I hope you brought lunch. By the time I get to the middle... I'm going to need some energy.
Speaker 2: Of course I did.
Speaker 3: What's the matter, Maggie?
Speaker 5: Just thinking about that.
Speaker 2: Echo last night. It still gives me chills.
Speaker 3: I grant you it was weird. But it was just an echo. Why don't you try one?
Speaker 2: I'm not sure that I want to.
Speaker 6: Ah, go on.
Speaker 2: Hello?
Speaker 6: There, you see?
Speaker 2: What was that?
Speaker 4: I don't know.
Speaker 5: Brad, I'm scared.
Speaker 3: There's nothing to be scared about. You know we may not be the only people out here. It's probably just some kids trying to scare us.
Speaker 4: Oh, my.
Speaker 1: I must have jerked it off.
Speaker 2: You did.
Speaker 4: Why didn't you wake me up?
Speaker 5: You look so, so peaceful, babe.
Speaker 2: Peace, peace, peace. I don't know what's that. shore. Yep, good idea.
Speaker 5: Come on, Brad.
Speaker 3: I'm going as fast as I can.
Speaker 4: What's happening? What's happening?
Speaker 6: Trying.
Speaker 3: The canoe isn't going anywhere.
Speaker 1: An idyllic lake that seems to hold much more than just water. Brad and Maggie stare at each other as Brad desperately tries to row the small canoe to the shore. And somewhere in the darkness, something is watching them. I shall return with Act 3 shortly. going to the mountains and hearing your own voice echo back to you can be a peaceful thing however for Brad and Maggie Harris what comes back can only be described as.
Speaker 4: Demonic Brad yes Hold me.
Speaker 3: What do you want from us? If this is some sort of a prank, it's not funny.
Speaker 1: Megan, stop!
Speaker 3: Maggie, hold on.
Speaker 6: What is it?
Speaker 2: What?
Speaker 4: Hey, wait a minute.
Speaker 2: What is it?
Speaker 4: I was just thinking.
Speaker 3: What does any echo want?
Speaker 5: I don't know.
Speaker 4: Our voices.
Speaker 5: What?
Speaker 3: Don't you see? An echo is just a voice that comes back to you. If we don't give it a voice, maybe it will go away. Did you hear that? It sounded a little sad.
Speaker 2: I don't care what it sounds like.
Speaker 5: I just want to go home.
Speaker 3: Maggie, keep your voice down. Just don't say anything.
Speaker 1: Come here.
Speaker 3: Let me hold you.
Speaker 2: I'm so scared. I know, I know.
Speaker 1: So am I.
Speaker 2: I love you, my dearest.
Speaker 1: I love you too. Brad. I know.
Speaker 3: I'm going to try and get us to shore.
Speaker 1: Mr.
Speaker 3: Clemens?
Speaker 6: Are you here?
Speaker 3: Yep.
Speaker 2: I'm here.
Speaker 6: I'm glad to hear that you made it back from Echo Lake.
Speaker 2: Mr. Clemens, what was it?
Speaker 6: Well, ma'am, uh... Really don't know. I do know that last time anyone went to Echo Lake, they came back, but not all in one piece. You folks have been the first ones out there since Johnny Mills went out there ten years ago.
Speaker 3: What happened to Johnny Mills?
Speaker 6: Well, Johnny was a singer. Good voice, too. He had a shot at a record deal when he decided to take some time off and go out there.
Speaker 5: And?
Speaker 6: They found him. A few days later, in a boat bobbing about, floating in the lake, his throat was ripped right out. Doc said his vocal cords was missing. Some said it was a bear, some a mountain lion. I just say, don't go to Echo Lake.
Speaker 1: Brad and Maggie decided to take Mr. Clements up on his offer for a stay in the hotel. The room was nice and quiet. The owner made sure that they had a very good meal every morning and evening. They browsed the local shops and bought a few souvenirs. When it was time, they went home. But they never forgot Echo Lake. You don't forget to come back and join me shortly. Our echoes roll from soul to soul and grow forever and ever. I wonder if Sir Alfred Lord Denison ever had the chance to go to Echo Lake.
Speaker 1: Our cast included Crimson McKenzie, Raymond Gibson, and William Stafford. The entire production was under the direction of Winslow Swan.
Speaker 1: And now, a preview of our next tale.
Speaker 5: I didn't kill him!
Speaker 3: You planned it!
Speaker 6: You put the poison into his drink!
Speaker 5: He was an inhuman son of.
Speaker 1: A- He was a living being, and you murdered him!
Speaker 3: Make it easier on yourself, and just tell me what happened.
Speaker 5: I will only tell you one more time. I did not kill my husband.
Speaker 1: I sure hope that you didn't.
Speaker 3: I don't think that death row would suit you.
Speaker 1: Doorway to Nightmare is sponsored in part by Swanage Press. This is your host inviting you to return with us through the doorway to nightmare for another adventure into the world of your terrifying imagination. Until next time, slumber peacefully. Epilogue. The butler did it.
