Speaker 1: Doorway to Nightmare is brought to you in part by Swanage Press. It lies in wait amidst your dreams, where nothing is ever how it seems. It is a portal to a terrifying world beyond the doorway to Nightmare. Welcome. I'm Artemis Black. The Italian-American mathematician and philosopher Giancarlo Rota once said, There are two kinds of mistakes. There are fatal mistakes that destroy a theory, but there are also contingent ones which can be useful in testing the stability of a theory.
Speaker 2: Mayor, whatever you do, don't make any sudden movements. Sean? What is it? It's... It's a spider. But it's as big as a full-grown cat.
Speaker 3: Kill it, Sean!
Speaker 4: Before it... It kills.
Speaker 1: Me! Our mystery drama, Bigger Is Not Always Better, was written especially for Doorway to Nightmare by Winslow Swan and edited by Crimson McKenzie. Our cast includes Crimson McKenzie, Winslow Swan, Mick Davis, and William Stafford. I'll return shortly with Act 1.
Speaker 3: Mystery. Horror. Thriller.
Speaker 5: Suspense.
Speaker 3: Novels and short story collections from Winslow Swan, now available from Amazon.
Speaker 1: All things bright and beautiful. All creatures great and small. All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. So begins the poem by Cecil Francis Alexander. However, not everything was made by a more wiser being. Science has created some rather wonderful things, and it has also created some of humans' worst nightmares.
Speaker 5: I don't understand you, Sean. You could have had your pick of any university. The pharmaceutical companies are throwing money at you as if they were printing it. The State Department has already said... The hell with the State Department or any of those others you mentioned.
Speaker 4: My work is my own. I don't want someone constantly looking over my shoulder only to claim my discovery is their own.
Speaker 1: No, Oglebay.
Speaker 4: I want peace.
Speaker 1: Solitude.
Speaker 4: A place where I won't be disturbed.
Speaker 5: Hence, you're leaving for the country. I can understand your motives, Sean. But why not tell me, your best friend, where you were heading?
Speaker 4: Because we both know how well you keep secrets.
Speaker 5: I suppose you're right. But you really should let someone know where you will be. I'm assuming Claire is going with you?
Speaker 1: Of course.
Speaker 4: She insisted. After all, she is the best transcriber in the business.
Speaker 5: I'm surprised she hasn't gone blind trying to make sense of your chicken scratching that you call writing.
Speaker 4: She's simply gotten used to it. I've also retained a lab assistant, Franklin Reynolds.
Speaker 1: Do you know him? Reynolds?
Speaker 5: I thought he had an internship he was about to undertake.
Speaker 4: I simply offered more.
Speaker 5: With that inheritance you received, I suppose you can make your own rules now.
Speaker 1: Exactly.
Speaker 5: Can you at least explain what you are working on?
Speaker 4: I'll do better than that. I'll show you. Now, let me take the aluminum foil off of this plate, and then voila.
Speaker 5: But what is it?
Speaker 4: Well, open your eyes, man. What do you think it is?
Speaker 5: It looks like, yes, a slice of tomato. But the size of it, it covers the entire plate.
Speaker 4: Ten inches in diameter. Would you like to try some?
Speaker 5: Is it safe?
Speaker 4: Of course it's safe. Glenn and I have been eating on it for the past two weeks. So seriously, have a bite.
Speaker 5: Very good. Best tomato I've ever eaten. But the size.
Speaker 4: That's exactly what I'm working on.
Speaker 1: A growth compound.
Speaker 4: And I have found the formula to make things much bigger. Imagine it, Ogilvy. A tomato. One tomato that could feed an entire family for almost a month.
Speaker 1: So.
Speaker 5: Why are you still needing to do research?
Speaker 1: Because.
Speaker 4: Because the blasted things won't stop growing.
Speaker 3: How much further, Sean?
Speaker 4: About three more miles, I think.
Speaker 6: Ow!
Speaker 1: Ugh!
Speaker 3: This road! Why doesn't someone come out and fix it?
Speaker 4: Because, my dear Claire, it isn't a county road.
Speaker 3: How did you ever find this place?
Speaker 4: Oh, sheer accident. Now, are you absolutely positive you want to come and stay with us? And you can always take the car and go back home.
Speaker 3: No way, Sean. You've discovered something wonderful. And I know that you will figure out how to make it stop growing things.
Speaker 4: Well, from your lips to God's ear.
Speaker 4: I mean, imagine it, Claire. A tomato plant the size of an oak tree? I would hate to be someone standing under it.
Speaker 5: Professor, it's me, Reynolds.
Speaker 4: Glad you found the place. Have you been able to set up the lab?
Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
Speaker 6: In the basement.
Speaker 4: Oh, this is Claire, my wife, and a wonderful transcriber.
Speaker 3: And not a bad cook, either. Very pleased to meet you, Mr.
Speaker 2: Reynolds.
Speaker 3: Oh, Franklin is fine, ma'am.
Speaker 5: Or just plain Frank.
Speaker 4: Well, if all is set up, I want to get to work immediately. I have to find the reversal process or we may be covered in giant tomatoes.
Speaker 1: The Baroness Jackson of Lodsworth, Barbara Ward, once said, We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do. I'll return shortly with Act 2. Have you ever had one of those days? You're fired. Where everything goes completely wrong.
Speaker 6: Don't you lay a finger on me!
Speaker 2: I can't stand on you!
Speaker 1: And the day keeps getting worse and worse.
Speaker 2: Hey!
Speaker 1: And if just one more thing goes wrong, it could possibly send you toppling over the edge.
Speaker 7: Toppling over the edge.
Speaker 1: A suspense thriller from Winslow Swan. Now available in paperback from Amazon.com. Sometimes you should take a step back. And then there are those times when even you could go toppling over the edge. Hang on to your sanity. Film director David Cronenberg once said, everybody's a mad scientist and life is their lab. We're all trying to experiment to find a way to live, to solve problems, to fend off madness and chaos.
Speaker 2: Damn, damn, damn!
Speaker 4: The cells are still growing!
Speaker 3: What should I do with the extra serum, Professor?
Speaker 4: I don't care what you do with them. Leave me alone.
Speaker 1: Yes, sir. I'm sorry, sir.
Speaker 3: You don't have to be so mean to the boy.
Speaker 1: Your idea.
Speaker 4: I'm just.
Speaker 1: I don't know.
Speaker 6: Sean! Look!
Speaker 3: What is it?
Speaker 4: Claire, I'm surprised at you. It's just a mouse.
Speaker 3: You know how I detest them.
Speaker 4: And spiders?
Speaker 3: Look at this place, Sean. I try to keep everything clean and now a damn rat.
Speaker 4: Not a rat, love.
Speaker 1: A mouse.
Speaker 4: A very small mouse. What the devil? What is it, Professor? damn fly? How did it get in here?
Speaker 3: But look how large it is. I've never seen a fly that big before.
Speaker 4: It's probably a horsefly. They do get rather large.
Speaker 1: Professor!
Speaker 4: Professor! What is it now, Reynolds? Can't you see I'm in the middle of an experiment?
Speaker 5: Please, You and Claire have to come upstairs now.
Speaker 3: Reynolds, what is it? Look, at the living room window.
Speaker 4: What in the hell is that thing?
Speaker 3: It looks like... No, it can't be.
Speaker 4: It's a mosquito.
Speaker 6: No.
Speaker 1: Oh, no.
Speaker 4: You must be mistaken. The wingspan is almost as large as the window itself.
Speaker 2: Sean! Come quickly!
Speaker 1: Claire!
Speaker 4: Claire, what's going on?
Speaker 3: Look.
Speaker 5: Over there.
Speaker 4: By the stove.
Speaker 3: Isn't that the mouse you saw the other day?
Speaker 7: No.
Speaker 4: Oh, it's as big as a sheepdog.
Speaker 3: I'm getting out of here. Come on, before it's too late.
Speaker 2: Reynolds!
Speaker 1: Reynolds, you fool!
Speaker 3: Get back here!
Speaker 2: Reynolds!
Speaker 3: Sean, that thing is a fly as big as a car.
Speaker 2: Rills! Rills, my gun! Look out!
Speaker 4: Oh, it's tearing him apart! Quick, quick, Claire! My gun, quick!
Speaker 8: What's happening?
Speaker 3: Is Franklin... Is he.
Speaker 4: Close the door, Claire. There isn't anything we can do for him.
Speaker 2: Now.
Speaker 6: Galileo once said, In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.
Speaker 1: I'll return shortly with our final act.
Speaker 2: It is in all of us.
Speaker 3: Waiting.
Speaker 1: Watching.
Speaker 5: Growing.
Speaker 3: Evil Within by Winslow Swan. Now available on Amazon.
Speaker 4: Watch Circle of Mystery Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on the Doorway to Nightmare YouTube channel.
Speaker 1: Jacques Cousteau once asked, What is a scientist? It is a curious man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to know what's going on.
Speaker 3: Can't you get anyone on the phone?
Speaker 4: What do you think I've been trying to do for the last hour? I'm sorry, Claire.
Speaker 3: What are we going to do?
Speaker 4: If Reynolds hadn't thrown the extra growth serum into the woods, this might not be happening. He didn't know what else to do with it.
Speaker 3: And you are no help.
Speaker 1: Claire.
Speaker 2: Be very still. And very quiet.
Speaker 3: Don't you tell me to.
Speaker 1: Claire.
Speaker 6: Claire.
Speaker 4: There's something behind you.
Speaker 2: It looks like it is a spider.
Speaker 3: What kind of.
Speaker 4: Oh, my son.
Speaker 5: Help me.
Speaker 4: I hope I can get my hand to stop shaking. It's as big as a house cat.
Speaker 1: Claire?
Speaker 2: Claire?
Speaker 4: Very slowly, walk towards me. Sean!
Speaker 2: It's got me! Claire!
Speaker 1: It's wetting!
Speaker 4: It's covering you!
Speaker 8: Sean! Get it off me!
Speaker 4: Claire!
Speaker 5: I'm crying.
Speaker 4: It's as thick as rope.
Speaker 6: He's driving me away.
Speaker 2: Stop. Help me.
Speaker 6: Help.
Speaker 7: I'm leaving these notes.
Speaker 4: In the hopes that someone anyone may find them.
Speaker 8: I don't know if there is even a world beyond this cabin now. I barricaded myself in the pantry, but I can hear those things scratching at the door.
Speaker 4: Those creatures Of my making. My serum.
Speaker 1: My growth formula.
Speaker 4: Created those... Those nightmares from hell. I have one bullet left.
Speaker 8: I'm not going to die like.
Speaker 4: Reynolds and Claire, torn apart by those things.
Speaker 1: No. I'm going to take the.
Speaker 4: Easy way out.
Speaker 2: Damn you.
Speaker 4: No, you won't get me. You won't get me!
Speaker 6: What?
Speaker 1: No!
Speaker 2: What?
Speaker 4: It's a. Dud. It's a dud. Fire!
Speaker 2: Fire!
Speaker 5: Have you hit me now?
Speaker 2: Fire!
Speaker 1: Sean screams in pain as the creatures begin to rip at his flesh. He realizes that bigger is not necessarily better. I'll be back with a final word.
Speaker 3: If you'd like to support us, visit our merchandise store. T-shirts, caps, mugs, and so much more.
Speaker 1: I leave you with a parting word from the poet Cecil Francis Alexander. The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruits in the garden, he made them, every one He gave us eyes to see them and lips that we might tell. How great is God Almighty who has made all things well. Except for this fly. And how did a fly get into the studio? And it's as big as my own hand. Our cast included Crimson McKenzie, Winslow Swan, Nick Davis, and William Stafford. The story was edited by Crimson McKenzie and directed by Winslow Swan.
Speaker 1: And now, a preview of our next tale.
Speaker 2: Bill, are you saying what I think that you're saying?
Speaker 1: I'm not saying anything.
Speaker 5: I'm only looking at the evidence.
Speaker 1: What evidence?
Speaker 3: There's no evidence to even consider the possibility that I may have done something with Emily.
Speaker 1: Ugh, George.
Speaker 5: You could save me a lot of trouble if you just tell me what did you do with the body.
Speaker 1: Doorway to Nightmare is brought to you in part by Swanage Press. This is Artemis Black, inviting you to return with us to the Doorway to Nightmare for another adventure. the world of your terrifying imagination. Until next time, slumber peacefully. Epilogue.
